Farmington & Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth & Families Trustee Lynn Halton presented a grant award check for $1,000 to Roz Keith of Stand with Trans on December 17th, 2017.
When Roz Keith’s son Hunter came out as transgender in 2013, there were no resources available for youth and their families. Roz founded Stand with Trans in the spring of 2015 to fill a critical need as youth and their loved ones sought to make sense of an unexpected and often challenging life transition. Stand with Trans is a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to provide the tools needed by transgender youth so they will be empowered, supported and validated as they transition to their authentic life.
Since 2015 Stand with Trans has established regular support groups and has organized community education events and trans youth empowerment workshops. The grant from the Farmington & Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth & Families will support a forthcoming community education event “Supporting the Young Gender Expansive Child” in early spring 2018. This free event will be open to the community and will explore what it means as a family to have a gender expansive child. Parent support is a key determinant in quality of life outcomes for transgender youth and understanding helps prevent mental health crises, reduces homelessness, and makes our communities stronger.
